Mathematical Explorations of Little House in the Big Woods (beginner)

$22.00 AUD

A unit for beginner (K/Prep to grade 2) mathematicians in measurement.

This unit is designed to be complete in conjunction with the text “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingall Wilder.

The activities are open ended, hands on activities that provide children with the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts. This unit is not intended as a replacement to traditional curriculums or text books. It is able to be used by families/teachers pursuing a variety of educational methods, however it requires guides to participate in the learning process.

Please read the blog and about section of the shop to gain a full understanding of home made math before purchasing.

Main Activities
How big is a bear?- measurement
How many babies on the bed- an intro to area
How many squares in a quilt- area
Measuring the wheat- capacity
Equal weight fruit cake- mass

The unit includes Extra Little Ideas, Links to ACARA, Example Timetabling, Language Guide and Shopping List.

Also provided for download: An mp3 audio to familiarize you with the main activities; Anecdotal Assessment sheets for each activity, including the Advanced Pathway; and a life size print out of a bear for use in the first activity (including numbered version).

Due to the assumed audience of Laura Ingalls Wilderʼs book “Little House in the Big Woods” this unit is primarily designed for beginner mathematicians or with the foundation to grade 2 (5-8 years of age) in mind. The ACARA Content Descriptors from this grade range have been used to develop the activities.

Because different children develop mathematical skills at different rates a section titled “Advanced Pathways” is included when possible in the main activities to allow for intermediate mathematicians (grades 3-6, 8-12 years of age) to complete the activities at a higher level if desired.
This is to allow for multi-aged educational settings and for students whose literacy level maybe different to their numeracy level.

Any updates to this unit will be automatically sent to you.

Please email hello@homemademath.net if you have any questions.
