Mathematics of The Jungle Book (early intermediate)
A unit for early intermediate mathematicians (grade 3-4) in measurement and shape.
This unit is designed to be complete in conjunction with the text "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling.
The activities are open ended, hands on activities that provide children with the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts. This unit is not intended as a replacement to traditional curriculums or text books. It is able to be used by families/teachers pursuing a variety of educational methods, however it requires guides to participate in the learning process.
Please read the blog and about section of the shop to gain a full understanding of home made math before purchasing.
Panther Run - measurement in distance and time
Jungle Grid - map making and scale
Disguised Design - shapes and symmetry
How much heavier is a Sea Cow than you? - measurement in weight
The unit includes additional examples, Extra Little Ideas, Links to ACARA, Example Timetabling, Language Guide and Shopping List.
Also provided for download are Anecdotal Assessment sheets for each activity, including the Advanced Pathway; and an audio overview of the main activities.
Due to the assumed audience of Rudyard Kiplingʼs book “The Jungle Book” this unit is primarily designed for early
intermediate mathematicians or with the grade 3 to grade 4 (8-10 years of age) in mind. The ACARA Content Descriptors from this grade range have been used to develop the activities.
Because different children develop mathematical skills at different rates, a section titled “Advanced Pathways” is included
where possible in the main activities to allow for intermediate mathematicians (grades 5-6, 10-12 years of age) to complete
the activities at a higher level if desired.
This is to allow for multi-aged educational settings and for students whose literacy level maybe different to their numeracy
